Today we would like to talk about the oldest and most traditional bodega of La Rioja: Marqués de Riscal.
The winery Marqués de Riscal, beginning his path in 1858, has always had an innovative philosophy and has been a benchmark for a sector in constant change, continuously mixing tradition and modernity. From the beginning they have been export oriented, which is the main reason for their presence in almost 100 countries, exporting 60% of their production.
The winery is well-know for introducing French winemaking techniques, seeking to create original, fresh, elegant and easy-to-drink wines, becoming, already in 1895, the first non-French winery to be awarded the Diploma of Honour at the Bordeaux Wine Exhibition.
In the early 1970s, following this innovative philosophy, and with the need to expand its range of products, the winery created in Rueda a new young white wine, fresh and fruity, forcing other wineries to follow suit and becoming the driving force behind the creation of the new Apellation Origin Rueda, in 1980.
Aiming to bring out their wines, history, culture and philosophy, but also to combine production with a space of leisure, Bodegas Marqués de Riscal created the City of Wine, opened in 2006, characterized by an original blend between tradition and Vanguard and converting the village of El Ciego, in one of the most important locations in La Rioja Alavesa, as far as wine production is concerned.
One of their more precious treasures, really worth seeing, is the Cathedral, located in the original winery. It is a unique wine collection of bottles of all vintages produced in the winery, from the first one in 1962, until today.
Currently, due to the high quality of their wines, their characteristic combination of tradition and innovation and new technologies, Bodegas Marqués de Riscal was nominated for the Wine Enthusiast’s Awards 2013 in the category European Winery of the Year.
Marqués de Riscal is a unique winery and from eBuyWines.com, we wish them the best of luck to take home the award.
