Located between 3 rivers, in the Gironde department (France), is the largest vineyard in the world, with more than 105,000 hectares and 53 denominations. The Bordeaux region is home to more than 3,000 estates, of which 200 are greatly known.
More specifically, the northern region -the Médoc- is a privileged area for the production of red wine. In fact, this is where some of the well known wines come from: Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe.
In the south, more “serious” wines are produced, such as Pessac-Léognan. At the southern end, are the estates that produce more generous wines: Sauternes.
This area is characterized by a warm, sunny climate, and its geology consists of sand, clay, marl and stones.
For production of white wine, the grapes used are Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. And for the reds, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
The most extense region of Bordeaux is the region of l’Entre-Deux-Mers, situated between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. This area offers a wide variety of white and red wines.
On the north side of the Dordogne, are a dominance of Merlot wines: Blayais, Libournais, Bourgeais, Fronsac, Pomerol and Saint-Emilion.
It must be said that the best wines of Bordeaux have high prices, but offer extraordinary quality. The wineries tend to sell their wines before they are available (premier selling), upon assessment after a tasting in the barrel.
Among the best wines of Bordeaux are: Château Pétrus, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Haut-Brion, Château Cheval Blanc.
Wines worthy of mention are the Great Classed Growths: Château Giscours, Château Lascombes, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Château Pontet-Canet, Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion, Château Haut-Brion Larrivet, Château Monbousquet, Château Valandraud, Le Petit Cheval, Château Montrose, Château Ducru Beaucaillou, Château Gruaud Larose, Château Talbot.
